The made-to-measure process can be fun, funny, creative, and educational, but it certainly helps to show up to your appointment prepared. We’ve compiled some pointers to make sure you’re all ready to rock when you join us to design your clothes.
Learn the basics

There’s a whole lot to learn about suiting, and we don’t expect you to know it all---that’s where we come in. But if you know yourself to be an absolute suiting novice, it can help to read up beforehand so you can make the most of your appointment with us. No need to fall too deep down the rabbit hole here; a little Googling is plenty, or maybe make a Pinterest board of style inspo. It's smart to at least consider some basics: types of suits (single-breasted, double-breasted, three-piece, tuxedo), popular materials (wool, linen, silk, cashmere) or patterns (stripe, check, birdseye). If you're getting ready for a specific event, it's important to know what the dress code calls for you to wear.
Figure out a budget - for money and for time
Creating a custom suit can take time, sometimes up to eight weeks, and we want to make sure we can accomplish everything you need before you need to wear the garments you’re commissioning. Keep in mind the potential for final touch-ups needed after arrival as well. Please communicate to us ahead of time when you’re going to need to have your garments ready to wear. It can be possible to rush an order, but that's case-by-case depending on several factors beyond our control. We always want to avoid causing any last-minute stress.
We at Mathias are proud to be able to guarantee quality while accommodating a number of different price points and with our products. That said, if you have an approximate budget in mind ahead of time, communicating that with us early in the process can help guide us away from decisions that might lead to sticker shock at the end. Don’t be afraid to give us a ballpark or sweet spot in terms of price. With well over 1,000 fabric options, it helps us to preemptively narrow down the fabrics we show you, and thereby make your decision-making easier.
Come with ideas (but stay flexible)

As we said earlier, we have no expectation that our clients will come in as style experts---were that the case, we’d be out of a job. That said, starting with a totally open mind isn’t always the best idea either. We have a ton of options available in our system, and going line by line to see every single choice that has to be made can eat up appointment time, kill momentum, and induce analysis paralysis. Playing around with the options in our online design tool can be very helpful to visualize your potential suit.
Don’t be afraid to bring some ideas to the table, whether that’s more direct like pictures of suits or outfits you like, or more indirect like vibes, places, or periods of time. Our role as stylists is to take these abstract inspirations and build a garment that incorporates them. That said, we’re here to advise, not decide, and you’ll always be the one with the final say.
Bring your favorite pieces
If you already have some pieces in your closet that you think fit well, or that make you feel good when you wear them, don’t be afraid to bring them along with you. Along with measuring your body, we can also measure your garments or even take a look at them being worn to better understand how you like your clothing to fit. Shirts, trousers, jackets, overcoats---we can at the very least derive some inspiration or ideas from what you bring.
Another useful thing to bring with you is a good pair of dress shoes. If you don’t have them, no biggie, but if you do, it helps a great deal when we’re figuring out how long and wide to make your trousers. The closer you can get to the shape of the shoes you’ll be wearing with the trousers we’re making, the better.
Show up in a good mood
This seems like an easy one, but make sure you’re in the headspace to buy a suit. It’s going to be a lot of decision-making and a payment at the end without anything to take home yet. It's a process worthy of not rushing and just taking your time. Remember: a custom suit appointment is always best when everybody’s comfortable and you’re able to be yourself.
